Seeing Things: Ghost Polaroids

A house in the Los Angeles hills, an eerie presence, Polaroid after Polaroid snapped (1000+ overall), a camera expert who can find no explanation for the blurs and forms and messages from beyond captured in the pictures, many taken before photo-manipulation tools were available to pretty much anyone with a computer. The true tale behind Seeing Things: Ghost Polaroids, on now through Sunday at DRKRM.GALLERY, has chills and twists and many things that the viewer will have to judge by his or her own eyes.

The people behind the camera soon got to know the wraith by the name of Wright (a smart spirit given to communicating by Latin), and the television show "Sightings" came calling, as did several paranormal notables. A man from Polaroid with a lot of knowledge about doctored photos also paid a visit; he departed without being able to say definitively what had produced the wispy messages seen in the photos. Follow the skin-prickling story (captured also in a book) through the mysterious images, and decide what those diaphanous forms -- there foggy, here thin as crepe paper -- just might be.

And we challenge anyone to not pull that old Polaroid camera out of the closet afterward to see what might be patiently lurking over by the bathroom, or in the stairwell, just waiting to chat.
