Parking Spaces to Turn Into Green Spaces

Don't be surprised to find a park materalized overnight in a coveted parking space.

Park[ing] Day LA is Friday. It's part of a worldwide project aimed at promoting more space for parks instead of for vehicles.

You can find a map of parking space parks on the group's website. The pinpoint map features a link to more information about the miniature park.

The event is billed on the website as a way to "draw attention to the imbalance of space set aside for parking cars in comparison to parks."

But there are some potential legal issues that go along with taking over a street parking space for a day. The most obvious: curbside metered spaces are for vehicles.

Then there's Section 88.12, which reads, "It shall be unlawful for any person to deposit or cause to be deposited in a parking meter any coin for the purpose of increasing or extending the parking time of any vehicle beyond the legal parking time which has been established by the Department for the parking space adjacent to which said meter is placed."

There are several options to avoid problems on the group's website. Option 1: "Partner with the leadership in your community, charm your audience, anticipate any objections, and serve as a diplomat for Park[ing] Day LA."

Park[ing] Day started in 2005. A San Francisco-based art and design collective called Rebar created a park out of a metered spot to comment on a lack of open space.

About 70 parks appeared last year in LA.
