Wheels are spinning at at the La Canada Flintridge Community Center as the Southern California Chapter of the American Ceramics Society as they gear up for the annual clay festival on November 13-15.

The artists are busy molding objects of both form and function. “If you can dream it you can do it,” said Sierra Pescher of the Southern California Chapter of the Ceramic Society of America.

The ceramics studio is always buzzing with activity as techniques and secrets are shared willingly. The poor economy has fostered a renewed interest in ceramics, Pescher said.

People want the ability to express their emotions through art.

Artist Karin Swildens creates both delicate eggs and brutish horses. “I’ve loved horses since I was a little girl and they feed the part of me that wants to express strength. And the eggs are like a beginning. So if I need inspiration I carve an egg sculpture and I find inspiration,” Swildens said.

The best work created in ceramic studios in Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, Ventura and San Diego counties will be on display and for sale on November 13-15 at the LA County Arboretum.

The festival is also part of a fundraiser for the Arboretum.
