There was Rin Tin Tin. And Lassie. And Beethoven. And a whole leashful of movie and TV dogs throughout the decades who, at one time or another, called our city home.
Then there was Rosie the Bulldog. Sweet Rosie was never on a long-running series, but we'd put the Belmont Shore wagger square in the grouping of "very famous local dogs." The pup, who passed away last January, was the main celebrity at the now nationally famous Haute Dog parades (her main man Justin Rudd was, and is, the events' organizer) and a well-known local around Long Beach. Perhaps her celebrity was due in part to the fact that she's been on Leno *and* the cover of Westways magazine.
Pretty famous, as we said. Now Rosie fans will see her name in lights, or at least written in sand, when the Long Beach Dog Zone is officially dedicated as Rosie's Dog Beach on Saturday, Dec. 11. The zone is the only officially sanctioned doggy beach area in Los Angeles County, we should add.
People and pooches (on-leash for the ceremony) are welcome. There'll be an off-leash romp-about following a dogly procession to the beach.
