Tonight: Stephen Hawking at Caltech

The great man will be talking about "My Brief History."

STEPHEN HAWKING: Just the start of the phrase appearing on the Caltech site should inspire any wonderer to wander to Pasadena tonight: "Professor Hawking has given the world breathtaking insights into the birth of the universe..." Enthralled? Enthralled. The author of "A Brief History of Time" will be giving a free talk at Beckman Auditorium. As it is free, we'd arrive early for a seat. 8 p.m.

OPEN PROJECTOR NIGHT: Typically the letters "BYO" mean that one is expected to arrive at a gathering with their own libation in hand. We like the changing up of the concept, however, especially when being entertained is involved. The Hammer Museum is hosting a BYO film night, tonight at 7:30 p.m., and "VHS" is one of the permitted formats. Three more letters we like. The comedy-making Sklar Brothers are hosting.

LA CLASSIC MEETS LA CLASSIC: It's daytime, 11 a.m. to be precise, but we couldn't not mention the fact that two titans of local food will be pairing up to give away free cups of chili (with sandwich purchase). The spot is Philippe the Original, and Dolores chili is the warming deliciousness in the cup. Be one of the first 500 to get that oh-so-LA treat.
