WHISKEY-WARM BALLADS: Alt-country saw many talented types put a new spin on the sound throughout the early '90s; Rhett Miller, and the Old 97's of Dallas, were well-regarded leaders, definitely by the music press. Miller has done some albums on his own, but his tuneage stays heartfelt and appropriately twangy; his solo show bears that out. Saturday, November 22, 9PM. Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles.

FOR THE GLORY OF STEEL: The Society for Creative Anachronism straps on the suits of armor and engages in medieval-style battle at the Steve Allen Theater. The live musical accompaniment, of course, is metal. Maybe we'll break out the fake jewel-encrusted goblet or pointy-top princess hat for the occasion? Saturday, November 22, 8PM. $10. Steve Allen Theater, 4773 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles. 323-666-4268

HEARST'S FAMOUS GAL PAL: How much we did enjoy "The Cat's Meow," the movie in which Kirsten Dunst starred at Marion Davies, the '20s-era actress who happened to be dating just your everyday average tycoon, Mr. William Randolph Hearst. For better or worse, that fact greatly outlived her film fame, but now LACMA is screening some of her flicks. Has the lady got the chops? Saturday, November 22. 9PM. $10. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard. 323-857-6000
