Cold War Heats Up With Free Fro-Yo Attack

For the first three years that Pinkberry was in business, they weren’t even allowed to call their product frozen yogurt. But that didn’t stop the “chilly bliss,” as they dubbed it instead, from spreading like a tangy, frozen plague.

Last year, after settling a hefty lawsuit for “misrepresentation,”  the cultish confectionary finally got approval from the National Yogurt Association to call itself “frozen yogurt” (to receive such covetable status, the product must use live and active cultures) just in time to compete with Red Mango, which hails from South Korea and opened its first U.S. store in July of 2007. Hence the birth of the “fro-yo” wars.

In May, Red Mango jumped on the nostalgia-based marketing train by introducing its “Tangomonium” flavor: containing the dubious “natural flavors” and promising to “bring up blissful memories of springs and summers past.”

To seize the spotlight, however temporarily, Pinkberry announced today the introduction of two new flavors: coconut and passionfruit. They are feeding their addicts the stuff for free this Friday between 5 and 9 p.m. Get your free yogurt here.
