Duck, cover, and get your dancing pants on -- Barbarella Bar's coming to Silver Lake in January. Will it be as big as its muse?

Cool and funky as Silver Lake is, it's never been a major hot-spot for serious nightlifers. Especially that stretch of Hyperion near the Trader Joe's, which is mostly takeout restaurants, grocery stores and what used to be Zen Sushi. That's about to change with Barbarella Bar, which will set down her giant-size roots in Zen's old space this January 2009.

The Name: Yes, it's a direct reference to the '68 cult flick that made a gigantor, sex-crazed Jane Fonda "Queen of the Galaxy." Waitresses will look similar, though hopefully normal human size.

The Space: Think you can bust a move with 4,300 square feet of elbow room? Lounge, restaurant and dance floor mean there's plenty to keep you occupied all night. Sipping Barbarella Cosmos while perched on plush stools at the 60-foot wooden bar is plenty entertaining enough.

The Food: Organically influenced large and small plates include vegan and vegetarian choices. For the meat fiends, let's hope the Barbarella Burger (Angus beef, blue cheese) is as gargantuan as its namesake.

The Drink: Eastsiders who scoff at westside prices will be happy. The extensive wine list is affordable and includes trendy half-bottle options. More than 24 international microbrew beers already have us licking our lips.

DJs will spin, and oh yes, there will be happy hour. Will it be too cool for picky Silver Lakers? Stay tuned for more details and photos when it opens in January.

  • screwed Saturday, Jan 3 at 5:41 PM FLAG COMMENT I couldn't agree more with Hunter! The owner Anat Escher is an awful woman. She hired a friend of mine as the executive chef and then after wasting his time (he quit because she was rude and completely inept), stole his menu and paid him at HALF the rate they had agreed upon. Despite his polite exit, she felt the need to further insult him and never reimbursed him for his tasting expenses. I was disgusted but unsurprised to r ... MORE >
  • Hunter Saturday, Jan 3 at 12:35 PM FLAG COMMENT Don't give Barbarella Bar your business, the owner is dishonest and unethical. She hired my friend to design waitstaff uniforms for the restaurant, then after leading him on for months refused to pay him for the work he had done. She also left him with hundreds of dollars in unreimbursed fabric expenses. Nasty people don't deserve your business!

  • Jagged Saturday, Dec 20 at 8:06 AM FLAG COMMENT I live right behind this place, I've watched the whole remodeling process as I walk by every day. It looks like it's going to be pretty nice, though possibly far too swanky/pretentious for silver lake.
