Grammy week is glorious for the music aficionados -- the swank, everyone's-here celebrations, the artists newly in town who swing by a club for a surprise set, the big show -- but it can also pay dividends in other areas of the art world as well. Take the Worlds on Fire: Grammy-Nominated Artists Exhibition, which is running through February 8 at the Pacific Electric Lofts downtown. The Shooting Gallery and artist Kris Lewis put together an eye-popper of a collection that focuses on one musical subject: Grammy celebs interpreted by two dozen-ish different pop painters, illustrators, and artists galore. In a word, fun. In two words, fun and funky.
Shepard Fairey (the man behind Obama's "Hope" painting) has work in there; so does cartoonishly grand Gary Baseman. And the Grammy garnerers depicted? Madonna (of course), and Nas, and Trent Reznor, and Pink, plus many more. Will.i.am, who hosted the opening of the exhibit, also has a fantastic portrait by David Stoupakis in the collection.
We weren't nominated for a Grammy this year -- maybe next -- but a swing by this show feels just about as cool. And we can leave the stilettos at home.
