Location Announced for 1st 7th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational

Grilled cheese lovers compete

The 1st 7th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational will be held in downtown Los Angeles this year, organizers said Monday.

The cheese-lovers' Mecca will be held at Los Angeles State Historic Park (map) on Saturday, April 25.

The Grilled Cheese Invitational "is the largest, craziest, and most exciting grilled cheese cooking contest in the country and is the best thing to happen to sliced cheese since sliced bread," according to the event's website.

Doors open at noon, and admission is only $5.

However, if you think you got the chops to make a top-shelf grilled cheese, the competition fee is $10. The cook-off goes from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Competitors can register at grilledcheeseinvitational.com.

Plus, every competitor will receive a kit containing a frypan, spatula, hat, apron, cutting board, knife, and other preparation goodies. So not only will you get to wow the judges, you'll leave with some cooking utensils (and don't forget that hat). In this economy, you can't afford not to compete.

"The event was created by Tim Walker in 2003, in private artist loft in Downtown Los Angeles as a competition between friends. Since then, the Invitational has grown into a national movement dedicated to perfecting the art of grilled cheese, with thousands of cheese fiends and regional competitions across the country," according to the event's website.

So grab the spatula and start practicing. Also, you may want to check out "Hints & Secrets to Creating a Champion Sammich."
