Apple could be attempting to challenge Google by creating its own "Street View" patent for mobile.

While it is similar to Google's Street View with 3D panoramic images, instead of Google's necessary finger swipes on arrows, the Apple patent follows the device in a virtual map, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's patent filing "3D Position Tracking for Panoramic Imagery Navigation".

If this patent comes to fruition, then a user would never have to look up from his or her phone to make their way through streets or buildings -- unless of course, they don't want to bump into other people. The patent would also be able to add an overlay of businesses for mobile ads, according to CNET.

The system would be based on the device's camera, sensors and accelerometer to figure out physical motion and movements on a virtual map.

Apple needs all the help it can get in the Apple Maps vs. Google Maps rivalry. With such a recent public failure, Apple needs a maps app that could truly surpass Google.
