Facebook game developer Zynga only released CityVille Dec. 2, but it now has 69.9 million monthly users, surpassing its own former game leader, FarmVille. FarmVille now has 57.2 million users per month, according to data from AppData.com, an independent application traffic tracking service which reports on Facebook.
The 25-day-old game shows that Zynga knows its Facebook audience well, including what will addict users in only a few weeks of play. Two other Zynga games, Texas HoldEm Poker (ranked No. 4 with 34.9 million monthly users) and FrontierVille (ranked No. 5 with 30.5 million monthly users) round out the top five applications on Facebook. Phrases, a daily quote application by developer Takeoff Monkey, is the only non-Zynga offering.
The San Francisco-based Zynga Inc. recently received $300 million from SoftBank and Google who bought interest in the game developer, adding to Zynga's $180 million in venture capital already raised in 2009. The company is now estimated to be worth $5 billion.
