Facebook Unleashes Instagram

Facebook announced today that it will be bringing Instagram to Facebook and integrating the photo platform with its own infrastructure.

"For so many people, sharing photos with friends is an important part of the Facebook experience. That’s why we’re so excited to bring Instagram to Facebook and see what we can create together," wrote Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineer at Facebook on the Facebook blog. "Instagram will continue to serve its community, and we will help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure. We also can’t wait to work with the talented Instagram team to improve the mobile experience."

Facebook was cleared for the $1 billion Instagram acquisition late last month -- which, because of falling Facebook stock, is now worth about $740 million.

Schroepfer also emphasized that Facebook was growing Instagram independently. Whether this means that the social network will keep Instagram's 16 employees on the payroll is unknown, but at least it's paying lip service to keeping it running.
