Gmail Explains Spam to You

Google has retooled its email web client, Gmail, to explain to users why it decides some pieces of email are spam and others are not.

"Starting today, we’ll be showing a brief explanation at the top of each of your spam messages. Simply look at any message in your spam folder and now you can find out why it was put there and learn about any potentially harmful content within the message," Ela Czajka, a software engineer for Gmail wrote on the Gmail blog.

So far there are a few reasons why email is marked as spam: a user previously marks it as spam, it may contain a virus or malicious link or it's similar to previous messages found by Gmail's spam filter.

For most people, this will hardly be a shock. Most of our spam folders are filled with ads and pleas from Nigerian princes. But just in case your friend or colleague is always put in the spam folder, and not the priority inbox, there's a way to get them back to the main inbox -- by clicking the email in the spam folder and telling Gmail it isn't spam.
