Steve Jobs Wanted “Holy War” Against Google

Apple's former chief and founder Steve Jobs called for a "holy war" against Google and its Android operating system, according to emails at Apple’s patent-infringement suit with Samsung.

The emails were shown by Samsung’s lawyers in opening arguments at the latest patent-infringement trial between Apple and Samsung in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif, according to the Wall Street Journal. In a 2010 email to Apple employees, Jobs called the email,  “2011: Holy War with Google.”

In other emails, Jobs wrote “Apple is in danger of hanging on to old paradigm for too long (innovator’s dilemma)” and “Google and Microsoft are further along on the technology” to connect and synchronize features across all devices. Jobs was becoming fearful that Google had created an operating system that was becoming a rival -- and it did, creating open-source operating system that gave manufacturers a cheap and easy way to compete with the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung’s attorney John Quinn showed the emails as part of its legal strategy -- that Apple’s really  fighting Google and Android, not Samsung. Four of the five patents that Apple accuses of infringement were developed by Android.

Apple denied the statement. “Don’t be misled by that. This case is not about Google,” Apple’s lawyer Harold McElhinny said in opening statements.

Samsung's argument is a compelling one, but we don't know if it's enough to cause a much-needed win for the Samsung team.
