Zynga May Be Shopping for Angry Birds

Could Facebook mainstay Zynga buy Rovio, the maker of the colossal "Angry Birds"? Rumors say that the social game developer is sniffing around the Finnish game developer after an unsuccessful bid for PopCap Games last month.

We wrote about Electronic Arts buying PopCap Games for $1.3 billion last month, while rival Zynga was left kicking the ground. Zynga, which grew to prominence on the back of Facebook and isn't known for its game development, needs to acquire a winner or at least a catalog of games to stay on the cutting edge. Rovio's game roster is mediocre but has one amazing one-hit wonder in Angry Birds, which has been downloaded 250 million times and boasts 120 million active players, according to AllThingsD.

Angry Birds has been appearing more on Facebook, using the social network to promote its game but also prompting speculation it would develop a social game. If Rovio wants to go that route, then Zynga would be more than happy to oblige and take over. But tell the Finns not to take anything less than $1 billion.
