Apple's Uncool: My Mom Has an iPhone

While the iPhone fever is burning up the blogosphere, some are saying that young people don't want anything to do with Apple's signature smartphone.

About a third (31 percent) of 2,200-person poll taken by ChangeWave said they wanted to buy an iPhone 5, higher than last year's 25 percent who wanted an iPhone 4, according to AllThingsD. But the survey didn't break down the subjects into age, which may or may not mean something for Apple's demographic. That's because a piece in the Washington Post said that iPhones are for old fogies. Granted, all of the evidence in the account was anecdotal and from one of Apple's largest competitors (HTC), but we can take that as empirical evidence, right? From the Post:

Martin Fitcher, head of HTC’s U.S. operations, said Monday that he thinks the iPhone is losing its cachet among the younger generation. At least, that’s what he hears from his daughter’s classmates at Reed College in Portland, Ore.

“I talked to a few of the kids on her floor,” Fitcher told a crowd at the Mobile Future Forward conference in downtown Seattle, GeekWire reported. “And none of them has an iPhone because they told me: ‘My dad has an iPhone.’ There’s an interesting thing that’s going on in the market. The iPhone becomes a little less cool than it was.”

Essentially Android phones -- and there are many -- appeal to many different kinds of lifestyles and needs, as opposed to the one-size-fits-all iPhone. They're also a little cheaper and therefore a smaller investment, especially when someone is young and/or trying to cut costs. There's no way Apple is going to have a buy-one-get-one-free sale.
