Dodgers' Greinke, Gonzalez Win Gold Glove Awards

They were the shinning examples on an otherwise average defensive team

When the 2014 Major League Baseball Gold Glove Award winners were announced Tuesday, two Los Angeles Dodgers players had their names called: first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and pitcher Zack Greinke.

For Gonzalez, it’s his fourth Gold Glove. He also won in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Gonzalez committed six errors this past season and among first basemen he led in putouts (1,318) and tied for second in fielding percentage (.996). Gonzalez also had a UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) of 5.5, which rated him as an above average fielder, according to FanGraphs advanced defensive metrics. UZR is just a funky acronym that puts a number on how many runs a player saved or helped give up based on their fielding ability.

The play Gonzalez made that Dodger fans, and his teammate Clayton Kershaw, won’t soon forget is the pick he made on the throw from Miguel Rojas that saved Kershaw’s no-hitter.

Greinke was just as good at catching the ball from the mound as he was at throwing it. He made just one error in the 202 ⅓ innings he was on the field in 2014. The 31-year-old also led all National League pitchers in double plays (8) and something called “Range Factor” (1.81). According to MLB.com, "Range Factor" says that for every inning Greinke was on the field, he was involved in, on average, between one and two outs per inning.
