Amtrak at 40

40 YEARS: While rail fans know their vintage engines and historic lines, many are also big Amtrak aficionados. Of course. A train is a train, regardless whether its puffing out steam as it did a century ago or carrying thousands of people to their destinations every day. Amtrak turned 40 this year, and in honor of the anniversary the company has put together a special exhibit train. It'll be making stops at a few cities, including Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, San Diego, and LA in the upcoming days.

HISTORY ON THE RAILS: The anniversary train will be packed with artifacts and Amtrakiana. Think photos, uniforms, and our personal favorite, china. Remember when businesses such as hotels and motels and trains used their own distinctive dishes and cups? Well, we don't really recall that time exactly, but we've romanticized it something silly, and long for a day when logo-laden cups and saucers make a grand return. The first weekend of the California stops is Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6 in Sacramento and the final weekend is Saturday, Dec. 10 and Sunday, Dec. 11 in Los Angeles.
