And the New Fair Treat Is…

A winner has been named in the deep-fried-treat contest.

FAIR FOOD: We're exactly a month and a day out from the country's largest county fair, meaning that serious fair aficionados are gearing up. Well, truth be told, that gear up has been on for a few months now; the Los Angeles County Fair began to post vintage photos of the Pomona party on its Facebook page, all in honor of the hoedown's big 90th year. And then, a few weeks back, came this delicious challenge: Suggest a new deep-fry-able item for Chicken Charlie's. If you know the famous fair food booth, and you likely do, you know that "deep-fry-able" is pretty much a way of life, there (deep-fried candy bars, deep-friend vegetables, deep-fried Oreo cookies). A bunch of people submitted suggestions -- some intriguing, some a bit ummm-worthy -- but a winner has been named: Sybil Seely. Ms. Seely suggested deep-fried cookie dough as the 2012 fair treat. Just reading those words has a reaching for a pint of skim milk and a napkin. Oh, and the winner will be gifted two season passes and a parking pass for her suggestion.

AUGUST 31: That's the LA County Fair's opening date. No word yet on where the Chicken Charlie's booth will be located, but past years have found it clustered around the other food booths. Just look for the lines and people taking pictures of their food. Few edibles have the instant social media cachet of something unlikely that's been deep-friend.

ONE LAST THOUGHT: How melty will the chocolate chips get in the fryer? Guess we'll have to try some and see.
