ArtWalk Ventura: Breezy Goodness

The pay-nothing self-guided walk-around is nearly a quarter century along.

THE START OF FALL... falls in September — no spoiler alert needed — but Californians don't fully turn their thoughts to the season before October, at least in terms of expecting fall-like weather. September can still deliver the scorchers, or at least the warmer days, and the notion of strolling about, in the intense sunshine, doesn't hold too much appeal. But then October arrives, and, with it, if the weather map smiles upon us, some cooler temperatures, the kind of temps custom-made for an afternoon spent gallery hopping. It so happens that ArtWalk Ventura, a large-scale art-and-more happening that'll mark its first quarter century in 2017, is down with the cooler-temps scene of early October, too. The 2016 weekend'll unfurl on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2, and once again hundreds of artists will participate. As in...

OVER 700, with 30-plus galleries welcoming art admirers ready to find a new favorite painter or sculptor. It's free, and self-guided, and there are other complementary happenings as you stroll from Main Street to Santa Clara Street to Thompson Boulevard and beyond. Look also for "transformed PODS containers" to dot the Westside Cultural District, and other delights that accentuate the art-forward weekend around Ventura's charming downtown. The thermometer will dip just a bit come the first weekend of October; is it time to tell fall it is truly welcome? Get out, see art, enjoy softer sunshine, and revel in one of the creative community's most creative annual events.
