Hotel Del's Comic-Con Cocktails

The Coronado landmark raises a pop culture toast to convention goers.

HOW CAN A PLACE... be out of the way but on the tried-and-trod path? When that place is Hotel del Coronado and it is Comic-Con International weekend 'round San Diego. True, the island-based, turret-topped landmark is not snug against the convention center like a host of high-rise (and low-rise and medium-rise) hotels.

In short? Convention goers need to plan transportation across the big bridge if they desire some playtime at the 1800s-era property. But, goodness, they do, and while theories might abound as to why efforts are made -- um, because it is famous and landmark and beloved, should be at the top of that particular list -- we'll also land on the fact that The Del is one of hot spots of iconic fantasy in the area. It is, after all, much associated with "The Wizard of Oz," one of the granddaddies to all modern genre stories. Why wouldn't a Comic-Con attendee want to see author L. Frank Baum's famous Del ballroom chandeliers?

BUT... there are other reasons to spend some time on the island during the giant pop culture gathering. The hotel has created two cocktails in honor of Comic-Con, and comic book fans will appreciate the names. The Mary Jane Watson -- helloooo, "Spider-Man" -- includes Bacardi Rum, Luxardo Maraschino Cherry Liquor, and pineapple while The Silver Surfer -- helloooo, "Fantastic Four -- includes Patron Silver, Lillet, St. Germain Elderflower, lemon and orange. The drinks? They're fifteen bucks a pop. Your walk on the beach after sipping one? Totally free. Thinking "Wizard of Oz" thoughts and how The Del's connection to one of the great fantasy stories makes sense, given San Diego's prominent spot in the fantasy-focused convention world? You can ponder that, or you can just watch the waves and take a breather from that crowded convention center floor.
