BEGINNING ANY STORY... about Mammoth Mountain in the springtime of 2017 without making mention of the loads and loads (and loads) of snow that the ski destination received over the past winter? It can't be done, nor should it be done, for the Sierra play place was on the receiving end of an epic amount of cold, frosty stuff. As of April 18, Mammoth had sailed over the 600" mark for the season (measured at the Main Lodge), meaning this winter will be one that skiers talk about, well, forever and always. But the the snowfall amount isn't the only topic that's sure to set chins wagging up at the resort in the coming days. It's also time for the Mammoth Mountain Pond Skim, a wacky rite of spring that brings an assortment of high jinks to the higher elevation spot.
WHAT'S A POND SKIM? It's a pretty descriptive name, but if you desire a tad more clarification, picture a boarder, in costume, heading down a sloped hill and straight onto a lengthy body of water, where skimming for some length will then be attempted (before both board and board sink into the drink).
