A JOYFUL REMEMBRANCE: When fans learned of the death of actor Robin Williams on Monday, Aug. 11, they headed, in literal droves or at least notable numbers, to social media sites to share memories and pay homage to a gifted performer who brought a lot of laughter to their lives over a lot of years. The second stop, after the social media sites, at least for many people, seemed to be YouTube to search for talk show appearances, and their own DVRs and DVD shelves, where favorite films like "The Fisher King" and "Hook" could be found. But bursting into giggles is an experience enhanced when it is shared by others, and any Robin Williams fan knows that the giggles tend to grow when there are several people watching a famous, and famously hilarious scene. That community will be very much intact when lovers of "Mrs. Doubtfire" and the comedian's other comic personas gather at Soma StrEat Food Park on Saturday, Aug. 16 for FunCheapSF's Robin Williams Mini Film Festival. Though it isn't too "mini" by any standards: Think three of the thespians' funny flicks plus his last HBO stand-up special. That's "Weapons of Self Destruction" and hails from 2009, and it'll round out the seven- to eight-hour screening.
AND THE FILMS? Indeed, "Mrs. Doubtfire" is on there, of course (and, indeed, it's a film with ties to the City by the Bay, where it is set). "The Birdcage" and "Good Morning, Vietnam" are the other two movies to follow. And the time? Noon to 8 p.m. (the movies will run "back-to-back" says the organizer). Surely there will be many deserving tributes to the memory of Mr. Williams's work in the weeks and months ahead, but a fan gathering with some shared guffaws and chortles seems like a joyful way to remember. "Admission (and popcorn) is free," says the site, which recommends showing with a blanket and a box of tissues.
