Sierra Snow: Last Ski Call on Mammoth Extended

If you want to do the mountain on Memorial Day, well, now you can.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SKIING: It's been a tradition, up at Mammoth Mountain, for skiers, some in tank tops, to schuss in the summer season at the end of each May. The ground is still frosty enough, and there's still an inkling of ice about, and doing the whole ski thing at the winter destination can be done over May's final holiday. But the 2014-2015 was a dry one, as everyone knows, and the slopes were set to shutter for several months a couple of weeks ahead of the usual Memorial Day Weekend deadline. But then, a twist: A wintry storm arrived in the Sierra Nevada, not only closing down just-opened roads like the Tioga but re-invigorating snow-focused fun places that count on the cold stuff from the sky to keep things well-juiced upon the slopes. So while the focus was turning to the summer pursuits just earlier this week (think biking, hiking, and such) this last blast of frostiness means Mammoth Mountain can, as in past years, observe its Memorial Day Weekend deadline. Which, if the five or so inches that have fallen so far are any indicator, will be easily met for the ski crowd.

BUT IT GOES BEYOND THE SLOPES: Aware that the holiday three-dayer falls on the cusp of the non-snow season, the Mammoth Mountainers are once again offering a unique hybrid package that covers a few multi-seasonal pursuits. It's the Ski/Bike/Golf Package, and ninety nine bucks nabs you nine holes on the course, entry into the bike park, and a seat on the lifts. Can you do it all in one day? Ski, swing, and pop some wheelies, if popping wheelies is your thing? Call 800-MAMMOTH if you intend to try this Memorial Day Weekend. For all of the good-natured one-upmanship that goes down around social media, a three-sport day, one that covers a fairly wide range of pursuits, seems like it should be documented. Of course, you can just ski, too, one last time for the season, if that traditional November opening is seeming pretty dang faraway these days.

CATCHY HASHTAG: And should you need a nifty hashtag for all of that social media documenting, the people at Mono County Tourism have it for you: #Maybruary
