MELONS AND BERRIES AND CITRUS FRUITS... have a rather impressive way of dominating the summertime produce aisle, and with fine reason: They're beyond ripe, and delicious, and you want to throw them in absolutely everything, whether that means a smoothie or a yogurt bowl or into a warm-weather cocktail. But the stone fruits also have a way of coming to the flavorful fore when the sun is high, with peaches commonly ruling the pie and tart and ice cream arenas. This doesn't mean, at all, that plums take a backseat. Not in the least, in fact; the shiny-of-skin, purply gems have their own pastry presence, and in juices, too, and few fruits are as refreshing when consumed straight from the refrigerator drawer. Old World in Huntington Beach is bewitched by this beautiful orb, and it takes time ahead of its mondo Oktoberfest each year to provide plums with the plaudits they so deserve.
