    Top Gun/Hotel del Coronado
The landmark hotel will screen the Coronado-filmed '80s classic on Friday, May 13.

PLACES WITH PANACHE... very often become places we associate with famous films. It's hard to see the heart of Chicago without thinking of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and a trip to Bodega Bay quite obviously summons "The Birds" to mind. As for Coronado Island? There've long been a few movies that have ruled this sandy, plane-filled, hotel-esque location. "The Wizard of Oz," for one. Nope, the Dorothy-led charmer wasn't filmed in San Diego, but "Oz" author L. Frank Baum wrote many stories while living on the isle (and designed the crown chandeliers at the Hotel del Coronado). "Some Like It Hot" is another biggie, as Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon romped at The Del in the Billy Wilder-helmed comedy. And, for sure, "Top Gun" is up there, in Coronado lore, as the 1986 action-romance employed a naval station and center, in addition to other local spots, as locations. While The Del, the 19th-century turreted wonder of Coronado, regularly acknowledges its "Oz" and "Hot" cred, it's about to give the movie love to "Top Gun," which marks its 30th anniversary in 1986. Yes, Friday, May 13 is...

"TOP GUN" DAY... at the Hotel del Coronado, which will start out early with a "Top Gun"-themed spin class (yep, the playlist'll draw straight from the "Danger Zone"-cool soundtrack). You can get a "Take My Breath Away" oxygen facial at the Spa at the Del, oh yes you can, or sip a "Top Gun"-themed cocktail out on the waves-close Sun Deck. And will the actual film screen later in the day? You betcha, so be on the hotel's famous Windsor Lawn for the 8 o'clock showing. After the film there'll be more music from the film at B&S Bar. "Feeling the need, the need for speed"(ing down to Coronado Island)? Get all the haps on the '80s-adrenaline day that's oh-so-near many of the film's locales.
