First Look at Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes in “Mr. Holmes”

Ian McKellen gave social media users a first glimpse Wednesday of himself as the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes in the actor's upcoming film titled "Mr. Holmes"

"Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he's 93 years old and it's my turn," McKellen writes in the accompanying text to his Twitter and Instagram posts. "The great detective has long since retired to the countryside, with his caretaker (Laura Linney) and his bees. But there's one last case to be solved. And there's the sting. #MrHolmes"

NEWS "Sherlock" returning for a fourth season

A spry 75 in real life, McKellen will portray the nonagenarian detective in the movie which is based on the novel "A Slight Trick of the Mind" by Mitch Cullin, and directed by Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls," "The Fifth Estate").

Holmes no longer lives in Baker Street and does not have the support of the faithful Mr. Watson in "Mr. Holmes," which is set in 1947. Instead he is long retired, living in a remote farmhouse with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro (Linney) and her young son Roger, and spends his days writing in his journal, tending his bees and fighting the effects of aging on his razor-sharp mind.

Roger has taken on Holmes as a father figure, and discovers an unsolved case amongst Holmes' files.

Set for release in 2015, the movie is currently in production.
