Disney Confirms “Incredibles 2,” “Cars 3” on the Way

Walt Disney CEO Robert A. Iger revealed Tuesday that work on a third "Cars" film and a new "Incredibles" installment is underway.

Iger announced the two films, and other notable Disney franchise extensions, in the early part of the company's annual shareholder meeting in Portland, Ore.

Pixar Animation Studios, which is owned by Disney, is working on "Cars 3" and a follow up to the 2004 hit, "The Incredibles." The first "Incredibles" film was directed by Brad Bird ("Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"), who Iger said is working on the new script. Iger did not say whether Bird would direct the next chapter in the story of a family of super heroes.

Fueling excitement over the upcoming "Star Wars" films now Lucasfilm is under the Disney umbrella, Iger also revealed the next installment of the franchise set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away will be set 30 years after "Return of the Jedi." A move that opens the door for original trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill to return to the roles that made them household names almost 40 years ago.

Iger added the new episode would feature some "very familiar faces" including a "trio of new young leads." But the only casting he would confirm was that of the droid R2-D2. Principal photography on “Star Wars: Episode VII" is to begin in London in May. The movie is set for release in December 2015.

In further franchise news, Iger revealed a fifth installment of "The Pirates of the Caribbean" is in development, but has not yet been greenlit.
