Iranian Actress Boycotts Oscars Over Trump

The announcement follows reports of a draft executive order banning issuing visas

An Iranian actress will not attend the Academy Awards in protest of President Donald Trump's draft executive order that would suspend issuing visas for people from some Middle Eastern and African countries.

Taraneh Alidoosti took to Twitter early Thursday to express her dismay with the President's proposed policy, and announced that she wouldn't attend the award show in protest.

"Trump's visa ban for Iranians is racist. Whether this will include a cultural event or not, I won’t attend the #AcademyAwards 2017 in protest," she tweeted.

Alidoosti starred in "The Salesman," which was nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film." The film has already picked up awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and a Satellite Award from the International Press Academy.

Her announcement comes one day after the Associated Press reported on a draft executive order that Trump is expected to sign this week suspending issuing visas for at least 30 days for people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen. The Syrian refugee program is also expected to be suspended.
