“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” Teaser Trailer Released

The first teaser trailer for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," the sure-to-be-epic conclusion of Peter Jackson's second Middle-earth trilogy, was released Tuesday, tweeted out by the film's account and promptly retweeted by Gandalf himself, Ian McKellen.

And what can we possibly say about the 1-minute, 57-second sneak peek? The battle sequences look unbelievable; Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom make for a beautiful trio of elves; Gandalf the Grey is one of the more reassuring presences ever to grace the big screen; Luke Evans' Bard is as commanding as ever; and it's so nice to see Martin Freeman back in Bilbo mode after having had extremely mixed feelings about him in "Fargo."

Freeman was the notable missing presence at the film's Comic-Con 2014 presentation over the weekend -- but Stephen Colbert, dressed in full hobbit regalia, moderating a panel that included Jackson, Lilly, Bloom, Blanchett, Elijah Wood, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis and Lee Pace certainly helped mitigate the situation.

"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" swoops into theaters in 3-D and IMAX on Dec. 17, the perfect multifaceted package to unwrap for the holidays.
