Grand Park Celebrates Dance, Gospel, and Alvin Ailey

Learn to dance, listen to gospel, and "rockayoursoul!"

Every great dancer hopes for their own one-of-a-kind style, something that can instantly translate to audiences and inspire other performers looking to shape their own specific vision.

Alvin Ailey was that person. Mr. Ailey was both a legend of the modern dance stage and a man who inspired many and continues to do decades beyond his death. His activism and work for social change influenced his choreography, and many of those signature movements can still be seen today by those talented performers who dance under the Ailey banner.

Now you can be inspired, too, and maybe go home knowing a bit of Ailey-style technique. RockaYourSoul!, a free afternoon of gospel music, dance, and Alvin Ailey celebration, is set to fill Grand Park downtown on Saturday, April 6.

The highlights? Twenty-minute dance lessons with "the best Ailey teaching artists" (so be sure to wear something you can move in). There will also be twenty-minute gospel lessons, too, followed by a joyous sing-out at 4 p.m. The description is too great not to share: "Gather 'Round for a dancing-singing-fan-waving-soul-stirring-oh-rocka-my joyous celebration!"

That's a perfect way to spend a springtime Saturday afternoon. In song.
