Horsey High Jinks: California Chrome's Preakness Party

Santa Anita Park celebrates the home state favorite.

How do you cheer on a local favorite who is making a big name on the world stage?

Well, you might gather together some friends at a local restaurant, an eatery that has a few televisions broadcasting the superstar of the day in competition. You might have some food and some drink. And you might hold it at a place associated with the competition in question.

Oh, did we mention this is all the same, even when the local favorite happens to be a horse?

California Chrome is the superstar of which we speak, Santa Anita Park is the place associated with the sport the horse participates in, and the competition? The Preakness Stakes, the second run of the Triple Crown. It gallops on Saturday, May 17 at Pimlico in Baltimore.

If you can't make Maryland, but you still want to cheer on the Golden State's own winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby, then Arcadia is a good place to go. Santa Anita's Chandelier Room will be feting the maned main celebrity of the day with a live feed from Pimlico and a menu featuring drinks and eats from some of the food and beverage masters behind Ray's & Stark Bar at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Want to head down to the stands instead? Don't worry; there'll be plenty of California Chrome love all around, with a hat giveaway and a "massive microbrew festival."

Wherever you catch the Preakness action, bet horse watchers across Southern California will have all eyes on the locally trained thoroughbred, a thoroughbred who has run at Santa Anita. Nothing like being on the ground where greatness has flourished while watching it flourish further.
