IMAX with Laser: New at California Science Center

See sloths, space, and oodles of other astounding sights with futuristic clarity.

The wonders of IMAX can still feel as though they're constantly arriving from some point located in the future, but, of course, the history of the 70mm film format stretches back decades, making IMAX as much a part of film-going these days as popcorn and trailers.

It shouldn't surprise, though, that the massive-of-screen, crystal-clear-of-picture experience still has a line open to exciting developments still to come. And a little bit of the future arrived at the California Science Center on Wednesday, Oct. 11 with the debut of IMAX with Laser.

What does it do? "With Laser projection, audiences will experience colors that exist in the real world, but could never before be shown onscreen," reveals the center's web site.

Audience members will see "the most vivid digital images ever produced" on the 7-story screen. That's not the only number that can make a viewer agog, though; a 12-channel sound system makes the you-are-there-ness of watching a big film even bigger.

The first two works debuting at IMAX with Laser are now open: "Amazon Adventure 3D" and "Hurricane 3D." If you see "Hurricane 3D" before Oct. 31, a dollar from your ticket will donated to One America Appeal, which is helping those impacted by the recent hurricane devastation.

California Science Center has partnered with nWave Pictures Distribution on this fundraising effort.

As is tradition with those works shown at the California Science Center, a deeper investigation into our world, from animals to weather, will be a part of the science-smart cinematic screenings.
