June Gloom, Meet Early Halloween

Do the foggy mornings have you in a frightful state of mind? Eerie events await.

'Tis the time of year when a person is apt to see people strolling down the street donned in both shorts and scarves or tank tops and knee socks. Maybe all four at once, even, if the individual was undecided about the state of the weather.

For June Gloom mornings create a false fall of sorts for SoCalers, and if we passed a few jack o'lanterns on the way to work, well, we wouldn't be all that surprised.

And we're not all that surprised that Halloween is on the wind in these foggy, fally days of early June. We know, we know, the bags of candy don't hit the shelves before September -- August? -- but, around LA, the creepy costume holiday is never faraway.

Look to...

The Great Horror Campout: Many mavens of the macabre shall show up for a "sleepover" at The Old Zoo in Griffith Park on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6. Why, yes, "sleepover" was in quotation marks there -- and we just did it again -- because "sleeping" isn't really a thing that's done too much at this overnight, fright-film-meets-reality event. You'll be running and scheming and awaiting the dawn with all of your wits about you, fingers crossed. Good luck, brave people.

ScareLA: Southern California's big and ever-growling -- we mean ever-growing -- Halloween convention is now an August staple on the spooky person's must-go calendar. But a whole bunch of spooky people are required to run the two-day eek-stravangaza, and the call just went out over the first days of June for volunteers. Fun stuff and you may get to make a few people jump. Oh, and if you'd rather attend as just a fan and not a volunteer, check it out: Loads of announcements from the con are coming down the pike, like the inclusion The Vault of Darkness, "an interactive dark exhibit" which gives people a chance to see special effects in a fresh way. Dates? Aug. 8 and 9

Halloween Horror Nights: Universal Studio Hollywood's mazes-and-more-tacular is still a bit out, but, as with past years, auditions to become a scareactor are not. They're typically held in July, which means, yes, that these auditions are happening next month (dates TBA). June Gloom, you really do bring a touch of Halloween on your chilly breeze.
