LACMA: Free to Visit on Memorial Day

Make for the Miracle Mile for lamp photos, painting love, and Ethopian-inspired jazz, all courtesy of Target.

Warm-weather traditions around Southern California are plentiful and faithfully observed, whether it is vowing to see at least one concert outside during the summer, make it to the beach Independence Day, or visit one major museum on one of its pay-nothing days.

Those pay-nothing, engage-with-art happenings are also plentiful, but knowing when they fall on the calendar sometimes requires a talent for memorization.

But if it is a holiday Monday, you know that chances are good that Target is sponsoring a free day at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This is always worth double-checking, of course, and we'd never simply send you to the Miracle Mile, blithely, while assuming the holiday Monday in question is paid for at the museum. (Though, if you do go, you can always admire the tar pits next door, for free, any ol' time.)

Memorial Day 2017 is one such get-in-gratis holiday Monday, courtesy of the company, and LACMA is doing it up with "bilingual tours, art workshops, and live music with Ethio Cali at 12:30 and 2:45 pm" (Ethio Cali takes its awesome inspiration from the Ethiopian music scene of a few decades back, as well as other soundful sources from points around the planet.)

Parking at LACMA? There's a fee, and there's plenty of metered parking in the area, too.

Savoring a free day at a sublime institution of visual ideas and aural journeys? That's as summer-traditional as things get around our region, making a free holiday Monday at LACMA as LA as a blue sky or a wave meeting the sand.

Opening hour for all of this delightful free-a-tude? Eleven o'clock, though, of course, you can get your required photo in at "Urban Light" ahead of LACMA's official opening time.
