Leap Day: SoCal Discounts + Go-Outs

It's the most offbeat 24 hours of the year.

All of us have been known to wile away an hour or two, doing not much of anything, just to let a little time pass in a relaxed and unstressy fashion.

But letting the 24 hours of Leap Day flow into the receding distance without at least an acknowledgment, or, better yet, a suitably interesting activity, seems a bit of shame, since February 29 is a date seen on the calendar every four years.

The pressure is on, clearly, to make the most of the year's bonus day. So while we ponder our planet's journey around our nearest star, and how a bit of extra time in that journey goes on to create Leap Day every four years, let us look to stuff (and deals) happening in Southern California. There are...

The Food Deals: Leap Day 2016 is a Monday, which just might be the comfort-food-iest day of the week, so good thing, then, that Hungry Howie's has a Leap Day deal afoot. For sure, the number "29" is involved, and this is how: Buy a large topping pizza at the usual price and score a second large one-topping pizza for 29¢. The Dog Haus and Love + Salt both have specials going, too, and if your birthday is Feb. 29 you'll nab a free meal at Hard Rock Cafe. There are a whole slew of sweet discounts during the day, so for the full list, head this way.

The Hotel Deals: Monday can send one's thoughts to getting away from it all, and when it is a Leap Day? The wish to make the most of it only grows stronger. A couple of Southern California hotels, including the Shorebreak Hotel and Palomar San Diego, have savings to offer, while L.E. Hotels will keep a few of the money-saving packages going throughout all of the Leap Year.

The National Parks: Nope, the national parks are not waiving entrance fees today, at those parks that charge them, but the National Park Foundation does have recommendations about quirky park locations, the perfect places to spend a quirky Feb. 29. Death Valley and the sequoias both get a shout-out on the national list. Have a (Leap) day free to kick around and enjoy those bonus hours? Head outdoors for some strange and awesome sights.
