Lucky (and Adoptable) Pets for St. Pat's

Want to observe the holiday in a new way? Bring home a friend.

Every holiday has its instantly recognizable traditions and ways of doing things. But few days are marked in pretty much the same way, each and every year, as St. Patrick's Day. It's shiny shamrocks and green beers really have entered the holiday pantheon of tried-and-true tropes.

So has the word "lucky," a term that's very much associated with March 17. It's also something someone might say about a cat or a dog who finds a new home. But we think "lucky" can also apply to the human who gives that animal a home; now they've got a new friend to care for, an important and fortunate calling.

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA are applying that lucky spirit to the "Luck of the Irish O'doption Weekend" (yep, "O'doption"). From March 15 through 17, the Crown City society will welcome prospective pup and feline parents with the festive chance to win a prize from the Pot of Gold. Prizes include having your adoption fee waived as well as a 50-percent off deal on the fee. (Both prizes would definitely go in the "lucky" column).

There are other pet-nice goodies in the pot. If you adopt a dog on March 15, they get a free bath, too.

It's a fine way to tie a holiday weekend, one that is usually associated with taverns and green rivers, to something that gives a little magic all year long. If you already love a pet, you know that you are the lucky one.
