Communities around Southern California will celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1. But if you want to be at the highest point in the region, head for OUE Skyspace LA, which is marking the event.

National Night Out, the "national community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships," can unfurl at a wide variety of locations with a number of different themes, crowd sizes, and planned activities.

It's never been a one-size-fits-all kind of occasion since its start in 1984; rather, neighbors and friends and those people who didn't yet know each other but who wanted to meet more locals would pause to gather at a ballpark or playground or in a cul de sac or on a neighbor's porch, all to mark the summertime get-together.

Rarely, though, has National Night Out happened so close to the night, as in the stars and sky above, since ballparks and playgrounds and homes tend to be rather close to the ground. OUE Skyspace LA, though, is definitely not, making its Tuesday, Aug. 1 celebration something of a stand-out in the many around-SoCal happenings that will concurrently take place.

The price to join? It's fifteen dollars, and if your first question is this — "does it include unlimited rides on the outdoor slide that's 70 stories up?" — the answer is yes, for the kids ages 5 to 12 in your group, so let them know that they can return to the queue, again and again, to get in more than one "wheeee" down the clear, outside-the-building attraction.

Other doings during the evening, which will last from 6 to 9 p.m., include live magic from Micah the Magician, face-painting, the reading of palms, an artist creating caricatures, and more.

Imperfect Produce, Noosa Yoghurt, and Blue Bottle Coffee will be on the refreshments end of the to-do, should your tot want some sustenance after all of that sliding. Or if you simply want something to nosh while taking in the sunset.

To find other National Night Out events around Southern California, take a look at the online headquarters for the long-running, community-come-together event.

Or visit your city's page or police or fire department web sites to see if a map or more information has been posted. Both West Hollywood and Burbank have events just ahead, as to several other spots around the region.
