New: Free Concerts at Union Station

No need to rush to make your train; this "first-ever" concert series is all about relaxing and enjoying.

Certain types of businesses hang the "Sorry, We're Closed" sign at 6 each evening, but two places almost never do: concert venues and train stations.

Both locales are positively abuzz at night, one with the sounds of guitars and the other with the hubbub of passengers trying to find their platform.

That they don't meet more often, in a mash-up, meld-up, music-and-movement kind of way is a bit of a mystery, but it is a mystery Union Station is about to solve: For the first time ever a fresh concert series will debut at the 1939 gem.

But don't rush for the platforms to find the fun. The outdoor gardens of the Streamline Moderne/Mission Revival landmark will be the spot to catch live tunes, and for free, beginning on Saturday, July 2 with a show with Michael Leier, Bloodboy, Figs Vision, and DJ -- Grant Owens.

DYAN, The Brinks, Sam Fischer, Salt Petal, Lauv, and Pretty Sister will appear on Saturday nights in the near future.

"Live Nation's Ones To Watch & KROQ Locals Only Presents Summer Concerts at Union Station" is the name of this vibe-filled festivity, should your Union Station-loving pals ask if you have any plans and if they can join.

Art-minded happenings will also pop up during the summer, such as the projection-major, huge-of-image "Union Station 360°" and the "Cabinet of Curiosities," which will appear in the station's Grand Waiting Room for most of August.

Food trucks'll be nearby, should you need a break from dancing or art-looking or ceiling-admiring or all of the above. (Indisputable: Union Station has some of the most wood-rich, design-pretty ceilings to be found anywhere, so stop and stare up.)

And, true, we did throw out a Mission Revival earlier, and a Streamline Moderne, in terms of the building's look and lines. It also has Art Deco cred, too, making it a perfect symphony of multiple styles.

That should suit its new concert series well, as a blend of groove-with-it genres will bring fresh sounds to the grounds of a true LA classic.
