Remember and Honor: Memorial Day Happenings

Parades, remembrances, and a flower drop are part of the holiday.

Several places around Southern California will welcome those who want to honor, remember, and pay tribute to Memorial Day, and those who serve, on Monday, May 26.

For historic events, moving happenings, and gatherings full of memory, make for...

Canoga Park: The 25th annual Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, May 26. "Saluting the Price for Freedom" is the 2014 theme, and the parade begins at Sherman Way and Owensmouth at 10:30 a.m.

The Queen Mary: Long Beach's famous forever-docked ocean-liner served in World War II as "The Grey Ghost," carrying "as many as 15,000 men in a single voyage." Many military personnel make the ship a regular stop each Memorial Day Weekend, and this Memorial Day will again seen major attendance. The boat is offering free admission "to active service members of the armed forces, retired military personnel, veterans, and special discounts for their family members."

USS Iowa: The World War II battleship is hosting U.S. Military Appreciation Day on Monday, May 26. The program is on from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., so plan most of the day around your San Pedro trip. Or if you want to stop by the Queen Mary as well, check out the link above, as the Long Beach boat and the Pedro battleship have a combo ticket available.

Palm Springs Flower Drop: It's certainly one of the most visual of the California Memorial Day events, and truly among the most moving. The Palm Springs Air Museum drops, from a B-25 aircraft, around 3,000 carnations in memory of those who served. People below are welcome to pick up a flower and take it home. A Memorial Day program is on the docket, and the museum, which is filled with vintage planes, will be open.
