Santa Monica has gained a rep for having a touch of the quirky, a bit of the free spirit, and loving the Sunday hangout close to the beach (a good rep to have, as reputations go).

But Sunday, June 5 will be even a bit quirkier, and beachier, than most days. Bicycles will roll in the middle of Main Street and Ocean Avenue, thanks to the city's first-ever Open Streets event, and bicycles'll stay stationary on Santa Monica Pier, during the 6th annual Pedal on the Pier.

The fundraiser, which includes 100 teams raising money for the Harold Robinson Foundation, covers a lot of miles while staying in place from 11 in the morning to 4 o'clock. The bikes? They're SC3 indoor cycling bicycles. The minimum goal each team is going for? An impressive $2,500, which will go to "Los Angeles' inner-city kids and families" via a "year-round, life-changing camp program."

"We Spin, Kids Win" is the motto of the happening.

So what if you're not signed up for a team for the 2016 event? You can head to the pier to cheer everyone on, and donate to the most excellent, community-kind cause. If you can't make the pier, donate here.

There's no doubt about it: While bikes will rule Santa Monica on June 5, more so than they usually do, it'll be a bustling day with Open Streets and Pedal on the Pier. Best take the new Expo Line in, if you can, the better to enjoy all of the whole sunny scene, from bikes roaming a car-less Main Street to bikes staying still on Santa Monica Pier.

But they're only "still" in the stationary sense. Pedal on the Pier is a fundraiser built on the principles of heading forward and positive action, which is all about major movement in the longer-range sense.
