The Broad Museum: Sneak Peek and Opening Date

The contemporary art museum under construction on Grand Avenue makes some major announcements.

"What is art?"

It's a question sure to summon a round of conjecture, deeply held opinion, heated quibbling, and intense conversation among any group of friends who call themselves art fans, but this much is clear: Paintings and sculptures and the visual arts often stand in for crystal balls, of sorts, allowing the public to peek at larger ideas that are still forming, to know notions that are not yet here.

The Broad Museum, which will one day house much of that crystal ball-esque, tomorrow-looking contemporary artworks, will also peer into the future soon, with a sneak peek of its still under-construction third floor.

The haute-meets-honeycomb-style structure, which counts Walt Disney Concert Hall as a neighbor (and the Museum of Contemporary Art, too), will debut on Sept. 20, 2015. The Feb. 5 announcement included both the opening date and a special sneak peek.

As for that gazing-down-the-road bit? That'll happen on Sunday, Feb. 15 when the third floor -- which is described as being in a state of "mid-construction" -- will play host to a pair of light and sound art installations for a curious public.

A public that'll get an extra treat, if seeing grand buildings on Grand Avenue as they evolve happens to be their bag: "(V)isitors will be able to see The Broad's vast, column-free third floor in its raw state, before the art walls are put in place for the museum's opening on Sept. 20, 2015."

The two installations scheduled for the day "will interact with key features in Diller Scofidio + Renfro's (DS+R) innovative architecture." Themes of downtown Los Angeles, the museum's unique architecture, and urban hum will be threaded throughout the works.

The Broad is broadening: The contemporary art museum just unveiled a major expansion plan

Tickets are timed and go on sale on Friday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. They're 10 bucks each.

Eli and Edythe Broad founded the contemporary museum, a place with multiple missions. But hardly anyone quibbling over "what is art?" can take issue with the idea that contemporary art has a cozy relationship with tomorrow, and provocative ideas yet unthunk.

For the museum itself to also future-gaze is a gratifying parallel to what the works it will house do by their very nature.
