“The First Lady of the Santa Monica Coast” Turns 80

The yellow-and-blue Georgian Hotel, an Art Deco landmark, hosts a fundraising birthday party.

When you see an overhead shot of Santa Monica in a film -- which seems to happen in about every fifth or sixth film, right? -- you can quickly place the city by its Ferris wheel, and pier. Filmmakers can't resist that shot, can they? So much so we sometimes think of that as America's Pier.

Quick, someone trademark that.

But us? We look for a different Santa Monica landmark to place us, and it is very yellow and very blue, two appropriate hues for reflecting the sun and ocean so tied to our coastline. We do indeed speak of The Georgian Hotel, that handsome Art Deco landmark that's overlooked the Pacific for eight decades. Overlooked with poise, grandeur, and a whole lot of yellow-and-blue-ness.

Fans of the classic hotel will raise a flute to the ol' yellow-and-blue on Wednesday, Oct. 16. It's an 80th birthday party for "The First Lady of the Santa Monica Coast," yes, but it is also a fundraiser for Santa Monica Conservancy, an organization that has lent a lot of love, time, and effort to The Georgian and all of the city's older and historic structures.

Here's the upshot: 100% of ticket sales -- so, yeah, that's everything -- will go to the Conservancy and its preservation projects.

Don't you love a birthday party where the honoree switches it up and instead gifts a deserving outside org? Nicely done, Georgian.

A ticket is a hundred dollars plus a fee.

LA says goodbye to the iconic Conga Room

There are also a few other sweet things going down at the Ocean Boulevard destination. A Landmark Room Package and a donations-matching deal (guests make donations to the Santa Monica Conservancy and the hotel will match the total, with a five grand limit, through the end of the year).

Who says no one cares about our vintage properties? As long as we keep seeing a flash of yellow-and-blue in those Santa Monica aerial shots, we'll be chuffed. Love you, America's Pier, and please don't be jealous that our Santa Monican affections lie up the street. The Georgian is 80 and that deserves some applause.
