Weekend: Coachella Festival Opens

Prepare for an influx of music mavens, desert neighbors.

Coachella Music and Arts Festival: Thousands of SoCalers'll make for the desert for three days -- scratch that, six days -- of huge bands and up-and-coming artists and glowing sculptures and trashcans that are artworks and a whole outlandish sound scene that is so well-documented on social media that even those Angelenos not in attendance feel as though they might have been there. First weekend? It's April 10 through 12, with a let's-do-it-all-again (with some different twists) second go from April 17 through 19. AC/DC, Jack White and Drake headline. You? You wear some sunblock and stay hydrated, okay? Okay.

The Great LA River CleanUp: Speaking of multiple weekend-y type happenings (segue alert), La Gran Limpieza, or large-scale river spiffy-up, is an annual springtime rite that right our urban waterway's wrongs in the form of a massive litter haul-out. Volunteer on one or all of three Saturdays -- April 11, 18, 25 -- and head for a different part of the LA River to remove bottles, tires and the weird random items that find their way downstream. It's good for the wildlife and it's good for us and it's good for the river, too. Win/win/win.

Marina del Rey's First Half Century: Just about every municipality does something for its centennial, be it a plaque, some stirring speeches, or a wreath hung at City Hall. But we like Marina del Rey's panache: The ocean-swank, boat-y beautiful burg is marking its first 50 years with fireworks and other convivial happenings. The date? Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12. Happy 50th, MdR!

Animals All Around: We're not quite sure what over 500 corgis on a single dog beach might look like, but we suspect it is a sight filled with bounding, barking, feet a-flyin' and much joy. Join the Corgi Nation at Huntington Dog Beach on Saturday, April 11 if you yourself are a lifelong corgist (your corgi is invited as well). If you need to do some shopping/learning/enjoying in the pet realm, you're in luck, animal aficionados: America's Family Pet Expo, which is just about one of the biggest pet conventions to be found anywhere, woofs/meows/chirps it up in Costa Mesa from April 10 through 12.

BYO Cup Day: If you're a Slurpee maven, you know the little tiny sadness behind that final slurp (and you know the final slurp makes just about the best sound, too, sluuuuuurp). But that final slurp may be delayed on Saturday, April 11, which happens to be 7-Eleven's first-ever Bring Your Own Cup Day. Pay a buck forty nine and show with whatever cup you want to put Slurpee into, and voila! You've got a superdupermondo Slurpee. Or you could bring a tiny teacup, too? It's up to you.
