Weekend: Free Egg Hunt Downtown

Hippity hop (if you're so inclined) around Pershing Square.

FREE EGG HUNT DOWNTOWN: What if there was a giant egg hunt that encompassed all of downtown? That would be pretty hard, so we're glad this free community egg hunt is confined to Pershing Square. Date's Saturday, March 30, so the big bunny'll be hiding 'em when he's still fresh and not too worn out. Still though, it might be fun to have a giant downtown egg hunt. Surely some enterprising art group is already on this for next year? (Note to Pershing Square egg-hunters: Times are broken down by age, so check first.)

BUBBLEFEST XVII: There's something charming about light-as-air orbs being paired with a heavy-duty Roman numeral. But the Discovery Science Center's soapiest celebration is pretty hefty. It's one of the Santa Ana spot's most popular events, returning year after year (as the numeral attests). See giant bubbles, bubbles-within-bubbles, and make your own. March 28-April 14

WONDERCON: Can't wait for Comic-Con this July? There's WonderCon, the usually-in-San-Francisco pop culture extravaganza. But the mega con is in Anaheim for another year, due to work on San Francisco's Moscone Center. The costumes are big, the panels are big, and everything is big, as befitting an event from the Comic-Con International people. March 29-31

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS: Yep, a lot of dogs show up for the archbishop's blessing, and the occasional cat, and a few turtles and snakes, too. But people show at this long-running and free Olvera Street tradition with hedgehogs and hamsters and goldfish and other offbeat animalia. We like the decorated wagons and strollers that occasionally make an appearance. Spring festiveness with a sweet, childlike spin. Saturday, March 30 from noon to 5 p.m.

ALL BANDS ON DECK: When a multitude of groups gathers at Santa Monica Pier for several hours of all-ages, rockin', beach-close music, you know you can confidently bid colder weather goodbye. (Or say hello to warmer weather is perhaps the more positive spin.) It's not free, we'll note, but the line-up is solid: hello, Poolside. Hello, other fine bands. Hello, maybe early summer fun. Saturday, March 30
