Weekend: The Broad Museum Opens

The contemporary art institution debuts downtown after years in the high-profile making.

The Broad Museum debuts: It isn't often we get to say a new addition to our city is "years in the making," nor that the place has been making headlines around the world. But The Broad Museum, the striking new contemporary art museum located on Grand Avenue downtown, is the elegant exception. Eli and Edythe Broad are behind the varied and vibrant collection, a collection that's free to see (if you make reservations). A fresh restaurant, a peek-inside art vault, and more wonders await starting on Sunday, Sept. 20.

California Coastal Cleanup Day: It's called "the largest volunteer event" in the state and that's something to crow about. Some 67,000 pitch-inners show up along our beaches and inland waterways to gather over a million pounds of trash and recycled goods each year. The date is Saturday, Sept. 19 and you can find a group and spot near you, from shores near lakes to the edge of the great Pacific. After a summer of enjoying the water, let your participation be your thank you card to nature, for all the good times.

"Mummies" opens: "(A) selection of 20 mummies" are part of the new exhibition debuting at the Natural History Museum on Sept. 18, a show that will look at how the people lived as well as burial traditions of the era. "New Secrets from the Tombs" is the exhibition's title, so scholars and aficionados alike may discover information and tales that widen their knowledge of the "long-vanished cultures of Peru and Egypt." See it from Sept. 18 through Jan. 18, 2016.

Halloween is Here (sort of): We still may be having sunny (read: warm) September weather, but the spirit of Oct. 31 is blowing in like a chilling breeze. Halloween Horror Nights, with its movie-worthy mazes, unleashes a spine-tickling cackle up at Universal Studios Hollywood starting on Friday, Sept. 18, and Son of Monsterpalooza, the all-monster convention, glowers in Burbank from Sept. 18 through 20. Call them ghoulish harbingers for SoCal's spookiest season, which officially goes into high 'n gruesome gear now.

Dapper Day: So the last fashionable, vintage-togs outing at The Happiest Place on Earth was a mite damp, thanks to a late winter rain shower, but the fall go-around looks to have nice weather. What's Dapper Day? This is when thousands of people dress up in their stylish best and head for Disneyland Resort, just because. Well, "just because" is layered; they enjoy being out, seeing other outfits, and there's a fashion-cool expo to boot. Heels and stockings at Disneyland? It's happening on Friday, Sept. 18, though the expo and other fun lasts into Sept. 19.
