Weekend: The Grove Christmas

Seth MacFarlane hosts the annual tree-lighting celebration.

The Grove Christmas: Plenty of fireworks glitter above Los Angeles on Independence Day, and around the second Sunday of November, at least near the middle of the city. That's when the famous alfresco shopping center next to the Original Farmers Market stages its free holiday extravaganza, one that has the big stars hosting (Seth MacFarlane will again perform emcee duties) and singing (Lea Michele from "Glee" will be on the stage). It's all-out razzmatazz, with a "snow"-falling finale, on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Veterans Day: Honor those who have served at a number of happenings around Southern California, including the San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade, the 20th Annual Palm Springs Veterans Day Parade, a number of ceremonies around Orange County, and at our national parks, monuments, and historic sites (the fee-charging parks in the system will waive admission on Friday, Nov. 11 in tribute to our nation's veterans).

AFI FEST Presented by Audi: Did you score your complimentary ticket(s) to a screening or five? This is really where awards season vrooms into lights, camera, action, go time 'round Hollywood. And, as a matter of fact, Hollywood is the actual real-life setting for the week-long movie-packed party, one that sees a caboodle of above-the-line luminaries stop by to wave at the fans and open their films. Nov. 10 through 17 are the dates.

Holiday Ice Rink Opens: What if we told you that, on an 80-degree day, you could ice skate outdoors in both Santa Monica and downtown Los Angeles? Well, we're telling you that, in the affirmative, yep, it's real, not joshing. ICE at Santa Monica debuted on Nov. 3, and the mondo Pershing Square rectangle bows on Thursday, Nov. 10. DJ nights and more are ahead for the seasonal Historic Core attraction.

Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend: If you make for Anaheim to check out all of the bows and baubles making their yuletide-cute debut at The Happiest Place on Earth — Holiday Time at Disneyland begins on Nov. 10 — you'll likely see Captain America and Black Widow and a caboodle of other heroes roaming the resort. A few huge super-themed races are ahead, and other comic-book-y to-dos, too, through Sunday, Nov. 13.
