Con Artists Using DWP Phone Scam

DWP officials say they will never call and demand payment

Next time your phone rings, it could be a con artist who’s after your money.

Callers are posing as bill collectors from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

In this fast-spreading scam, they threaten to shut off your service unless you pay your outstanding balance on the spot.

One of these calls came in recently to Guns Direct, a weapons supplier in Burbank.

An employee told the impostor the store isn’t even a DWP customer, but he didn’t stop there.

"We then told the individual we didn't believe his story for a minute, and in light of the nature of the business we're involved with, he was more than welcome to come in and speak to us personally about it," said Palmer Bailey, an employee.
