LAX Police Crack Down on UberX Drivers

LAX police have written 200 citations to UberX drivers in the last four months for illegally picking up passengers at the airport.

The NBC4 I-Team has learned that LAX police are cracking down on drivers of ride sharing services such as UberX, who by law cannot pick up passengers at the airport because they do not have the proper permit and insurance.

Uber connects those in need of a ride with drivers happy to provide the car, all through a cell phone app. There are a variety of ways to get around, from swanky "black car" limousine service to the more modest UberX, where anyone with a car and the inclination can apply to be a driver.

LAX police have written 200 citations to UberX drivers in the last four months for illegally picking up passengers at the airport.

Police run the records of the drivers cited, and said that some of the UberX drivers they have encountered have criminal records, a fact uncovered by NBC4’s I-Team in a recent investigation. One driver was a registered sex offender and was at the airport to pick up a 22-year-old woman who was traveling alone.

An NBC4 I-Team investigation revealed that some Uber X drivers had recent felony records, even though the company says it does background checks and rejects anyone with a criminal record in the last seven years.
